Overview

Chumisa

2016 EWB-USA Premier Project

The Chumisa Vehicular Bridge in the municipality of Joyabaj, Guatemala is a 42-ft clear span reinforced concrete girder bridge. This bridge crosses a river that regularly floods during the wet season of December-April and is not able to be crossed on foot or by vehicle. The river is near the border of a neighboring municipality, Cubulco, whose residents often want to travel to Joyabaj for the larger regional hospital and markets. This bridge will provide year-round reliable access to schools on either side of the river as well, and thereby ensures that rural communities will not be cut off from education, healthcare, and economic development during a large storm.

We would like to acknowledge the assistance of the EWB-Wisconsin Professional Partners on this project. They provided funds, design mentorship, travel mentorship and this project would not have been possible without them.
